American Hustle movie review

So I went to see American Hustle last night and let me just say- I loved every minute of it.
American Hustle is a 2013 American crime comedy-drama film directed by David O. Russell, from a screenplay written by Eric Warren Singer and Russell, loosely based on the FBI ABSCAM operation of the late 1970s and early ’80s.It stars Christian Bale and Amy Adams as two con artists who are forced by an FBI agent (played by Bradley Cooper) to set up an elaborate sting operation on corrupt politicians, including the mayor of Camden, New Jersey (played by Jeremy Renner). Jennifer Lawrence supports the cast as the unpredictable wife of Bale’s character.
Now, for as loud, wild, and all over the place as this film is, it never rambled or seem to go off topic. The 2 hours and 20 minutes seem to go by quite fast as I was caught up in the world of the characters and the story.
The script was almost perfect, but some of the lines seemed to be long and rambling. The humor was really great and some lines were so perfect and humorous, I will quote them forever. The flow of the story as well, was very understandable and not at all fragmented or choppy feeling.
Whenever I watch a film, part of what makes it memorable, what makes it stay with me after I’m done watching it, is the acting. And American Hustle is that kind of film. There was so much talent all on the same screen, that I was awestruck. Each actor, leading and supporting, delivered first rate performances. Jennifer Lawrence was definitely one of the standouts, being required to play a more adult, mature role, and going above and beyond those requirements. Bradley cooper and Christian Bale were also great, and it was amazing to see Christian Bale completely transform himself for his role. Amy Adams was good but she didn’t quite reach the level of the rest of the cast.
Now the soundtrack was something I also thoroughly enjoyed. It really added energy and more of a 70s feel to the film.
There were so many things right and just a few things wrong with American Hustle. It was accompanied by a great soundtrack, intricate costumes and makeup to add the 70s feel, and was brought vividly to life by top notch actors. All in all, it was a joy to watch and I see many accolades in its future. Rate: 9/10
