Monthly Favorites: March

Hello lovely readers! I know it’s been quite a few months since posting on here, but I’m back, and will be frequently- my teaching job has been suspended due to the virus and social distancing has me in the house more, so I’m going to dedicate some of this unexpected free time to blogging more. Kicking things off will be a classic monthly favorites post for March. The “Month in a Quote” for this month relates specifically to the state our world at the moment what with the virus and the need to stay hopeful.

Books

The Fabric of the Cosmos (Brian Greene) – A must read for anyone interested in learning about cosmology and theoretical physics. Greene’s writing style is friendly and accessible, making the challenging material easier to digest. He covers concepts such as general/special relativity, string theory, entropy and time’s arrow, the big bang and the inflationary framework, quantum mechanics, the uncertainty principle, etc. It took me a while to get through the book, as it is best read a few pages at a time to fully grasp the material (if this is somewhat new to you), but it’s definitely eye opening and I came away with a deeper understanding of the space around me.

Music

HAIM – I’ve bImage result for haimeen absolutely obsessed with this group of talented sisters since they first started releasing music. They drew me with their strong women vibe and vintage sound blending rock, folk and pop. Some of my older favorites include Falling, Night So Long, and Give a Little of Your Love. Their latest singles released do not disappoint, with my favorite being being Now I’m In It. It strays a bit from their usual sound, by incorporating a more synthy, bass driven background, but the added guitar and piano in later verses keeps it all rooted in HAIM’s style.

Room for You (Joseph) – This is an incredibly beautiful song, one that speaks to you as a reminder that you are not alone, that you deserve more than the hurt you feel, that you are deserving of a place in this world. The song is stripped down to bare minimum acoustics, allowing the power of the lyrics to shine through. A stunning, quiet masterpiece.

T.V/Film

Schitt’s Creek – Shout out to my friend Sara for recommending this lovely little show to me. The premise is pretty basic- rich family loses all of their money, and ends up stuck living in a rural small town, where they begin to change and learn- but the writing and the show’s treatment of the characters are what brings this show to another level. The transformation from hilarious caricatures of ultra rich parents and two spoiled grown adult kids to humbled and well rounded individuals, is subtle and natural. There’s nothing false or cheesy about their development, no life lessons involved, they aren’t completely changed people by the end. The show is sweet but not syrupy, it’s feel-good entertainment, irreverent, and it’s definitely very funny.

Something good will come out of all things yet. And it will be golden and eternal just like that. There’s no need to say another word.
